practicum week 7

This week at Production Road was my last week at my practicum and was it ever bittersweet.

My time at the Production Road studio working under Carson Ting was so much more than I had expected. I expected more dirty work, but I was pleasantly wrong. I got lots of free lunches (thank you), I was given fantastic feedback, critique and invaluable guidance.I expected more grunt work like fixing photoshop documents and exporting files, but instead my responsibilities evolved over the seven weeks from a few smaller tasks to multiple new projects and rising deadlines. These tasks pushed my abilities I had learned in IDEA and taught me new skills. It was so exciting to use all my knowledge and apply it to real employment situations. Thankfully, I was able to use any Adobe suite program that my coworkers used, so IDEA had prepared me well. It was fun to use industry jargon around the workplace and to be involved in ‘office life’. I wanted to exceed my coworkers expectations so I took projects home (with permission) to complete them after hours, like the Fairmont project, for example. In the end, I was rewarded in the end with a gift card and a good reputation so all the work was worth it. The entire experience showed that work hard and the desire to produce the best outcome for a project yields fantastic rewards. Most of all, and to my surprise and elation, my practicum gave me the tools to become a freelance artist.

My verbal communication to my coworkers improved as my time there elapsed. At the start, I was nervous and worried my ideas would get shot down if I spoke out. But as time went on I was more confident in myself and knew that I was certified, so my ideas and concerns for projects were legitimate. I still find myself explaining ideas with the help of visual aids and continue to struggle communicating project ideas through written means. I was able to push past this hurdle by taking time out of the studio and get in a quiet space where I could distill what I needed to say into basic brainstorming bubbles and then use that as my jumping off point. I presented ideas with poise and was able to conduct myself in a professional matter, including the grunting labour of me building an Ikea desk, and stay sharp and on task.

My goodbye lunch! :(

All things considered, I had an amazing practicum. It was the right fit for me and I now know a bit more about myself. I was given the opportunity to work under a successful Vancouver illustrator and I learned so much about the industry that will be very valuable to me in my future. I made valuable contacts and connections to people I will always be in touch with. I enjoyed my time at Chairman Ting and will be returning for future freelance projects and I am welcome back anytime I want to work/hang out in the studio space.
